OMV Results 2020: Circular Economy
  • Caption
Plastics are a valuable resource that should be re-used and not thrown away. OMV and Borealis believe it is critical to take ownership of where plastics ultimately end up. This is why we are fully committed to advancing a circular economy for plastics as a means to mitigating climate change and environmental pollution. Borealis has committed to increasing the volume of its recycled plastic solutions to 350,000 metric tons by 2025 and aims to be a leading “plastic-neutral” producer of advanced and sustainable polyolefin solutions. Advanced mechanical recycling technology is a key part of this, with its lower energy footprint, availability and potential to further increase quality and yields. In order to support this transition, Borealis has launched the Borcycle™ technology brand, transforming polyolefin-based waste streams into value-adding, high performance and versatile solutions for demanding applications. Chemical recycling can offer a solution for plastic waste that is not suita

Petrochemistry - explanation video
  • Caption
Petrochemistry is at the core of many of the things that make up our lives today. Basic substances for the chemicals industry come from crude oil and natural gas. Processing crude, for example, gives you petroleum or kerosene as well as liquid gas and naphtha. The latter two form the basis for what is in effect an infinite array of applications. Find out the sheer range of products made with petrochemistry!

OMV Results January – March 2021 (KPIs)
  • Caption
With the increase of OMV’s share in Borealis to 75%, OMV has begun its transformation from a traditional oil and gas company into a global gas, oil and chemicals group, which is active in over 120 countries on 5 continents. We have successfully extended our value chain that runs from the wellhead to the refinery through to high-quality plastics. With this, we are laying the foundation for OMV in a lower-carbon future. In order to reflect the structural changes of forward integration into the chemicals sector, OMV has adjusted its corporate structure. From now on, OMV’s reporting will be based on three strong pillars integrated along the value chain: Exploration & Production, Refining & Marketing, and Chemicals & Materials. In the first quarter of 2021, OMV achieved an exceptionally strong – despite the external circumstances – Clean CCS operating result of 870 million euros. This was 24% higher than in the same period last year following the successful diversification of the portfolio with the expansion of t

OMV Results January – June 2021 (KPIs)

OMV generated an exceptional Clean CCS operating result of 2 point 2 billion euros. This represents the highest half-year result that OMV has ever achieved. A strong contribution from Exploration and Production came in at 859 million euros as oil and gas prices recovered to almost pre-pandemic levels. The Refining and Marketing result decreased to 289 million euros following a lower contribution from both the fuels and the gas business. Higher customer frequency could not compensate for lower refining margins even though the easing of covid-related travel restrictions led to an improved Retail result. The successful extension of OMV’s value chain toward Chemicals & Materials can only be emphasized as it contributed half of the overall OMV result. The Clean Operating Result increased more than fivefold versus the previous-year period reaching 1 point 1 billion euros. The main reason behind this stark increase are the soaring polyolefin margins as well as higher demand in the Chemicals & Materials business.

The Circle: Circular Economy - part 1/3 (video in EN only)
  • Caption
Plastic has many advantages. It’s lightweight, robust, versatile, and safe to use. It’s simply impossible to imagine a modern world without plastic. Producing – using – throwing away – and producing again. That’s the principle of the so-called throwaway society, and the reason why so many valuable resources are wasted. Instead, we should look to Mother Nature, who works purely in cycles. Plastic waste is just trash to a lot of people – but for OMV, it’s a valuable treasure. Soon, OMV and Borealis plan to recycle 350,000 metric tons of plastic waste per year and become a world leader in circular economy. This means that plastic waste has the chance to become a new product that’s part of our daily lives, the healthcare sector, or the automotive industry.

The Circle: Circular Economy - chemical recycling - part 3/3 (video in EN only)
  • Caption
Mixed plastics – plastic bags, packaging, etc. – can also be reused. This is done through chemical recycling. Chemical recycling is a process in which plastics are chemically broken down back into their molecules and raw materials. And because plastic is made from crude oil, it can be turned back into synthetic crude. This is exactly what OMV is doing in its innovative ReOil pilot plant at the Schwechat Refinery in Austria. Up to 100 liters of crude oil are produced from around 100 kilograms of plastic waste every hour.
