Marketing & Trading

The business division Downstream is split into Marketing & Trading (CMO) and Refining & Petrochemical Operations (CDO).

The Refining & Petrochemical Operations division concentrates on the operation, maintenance and expansion of our plants. Thereby we ensure the yield shift in our refineries as well as the implementation of innovations such as chemical recycling. OMV operates three refineries: Schwechat (Austria) and Burghausen (Southern Germany)- both with integrated petrochemical complexe - as well as the Petrobrazi refinery (Romania). The annual processing capacity amounts to 17.8 mn t.

The Marketing & Trading division places the customer needs and our service at the center of all its efforts which enables us to best market our existing and future products. After the sale of its Turkish subsidiary OMV Petrol Ofisi in June 2017, OMV operates a retail network of around 2,100 filling stations in Europe. The gas supply portfolio consists of equity gas and is complemented with contracted volumes. Gas sales volumes amounted to 114 TWh in 2018.

The ISO C4 project in Burghausen is a world first for OMV. With its particularly efficient and innovative technology in the petrochemical sector, it strengthens OMV's strategic focus on petrochemicals in the downstream business. Such a project is also an enormous challenge in terms of safety. A "heavy lift" is used to lift the top of the column, which weighs over 100 tonnes. This custom work requires weeks of planning and preparation. In the run-up to the project, all the work is precisely played through and secured. The entire project team plans with pinpoint accuracy and works with high concentration. Then the upper part of the column has to fit the lower part to within 50 millimetres for subsequent welding. The new plant for the production of high-purity isobutene will be integrated into the OMV refinery in Burghausen. The plant’s exceptional energy efficiency saves 20,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year. Up to 80% of the heating energy required for the new process can be met by thermal discharge from an existing associated facility thanks to a heat integration approach.
